I have just finished a book written by Jules Verne, it was
entitled “Around the World in Eighty Days,” the main idea of the book was whether
the main character could travel around the entire world in a matter of eighty
days. After reading the book, I began to wander how long it would take to make
that kind of trip today with all of the new travel technology, so in this essay
I will chart the path I would take if I went around the world. I would begin in
the Province of Alberta, obviously because it is where I live, and from there I
would take a plane to the North West Territories. Then I would take a boat over
to Greenland, and take a ship down to the coast of Portugal and into the Strait
of Gibraltar. Once in the Mediterranean Sea, I would dock at Greece. Next, I
would go down to Egypt and cross through the Red Sea, down to the Gulf of Aden,
and out into the Arabian Sea. After crossing the Arabian Sea, I would arrive in
Mumbai and drive up to New Delhi. From India I would head northeast and go past
the Himalayas into the Peoples Republic of China. I would go up through China
into Mongolia and eventually reach Russia. Once in Russia I would go east to
the Sea of Okhotsk and take a ship through the Bering Sea along the coast of
Russia, but after going far enough I would take a sharp turn east and cross the
International Boundary to reach Alaska. Finally, I would take a plane southeast
to arrive back in Alberta. A trip around the world would definitely be
interesting and exiting, and I think that with the current level of efficiency
of travel a trip like that could be accomplished in about a month. In a trip
like that the places I would look forward to most would be Greece, Greenland,
China, Mongolia, and Russia, if I had some extra time I would spend it in
Europe, I like Europe because of all of the history that is there.
