My overall favorite school subject is science. I enjoy it
because it focuses on things that are interesting. Unlike math and english, science
studies the various functions of the natural world, whether it be geological, botanical,
hydrological, or atmospherical. I also enjoy Science because I can relate well
to it as most of what it focuses on can be accessed by simply stepping outside.
Having just successfully completed a course on Science, I enjoyed it and learned
a lot, gaining a greater understanding of how nature works. Throughout the
course I studied geology, botany, gardening, weather, conservation, and landscaping,
my favorite section was probably the botany section, I enjoy studying plants
because they fascinate me, in the following paragraphs I will describe what I
learned and observed through the Botany section of my science course.
Plants
are a truly magnificent part of God’s creation, they have several desirable
attributes, for one they produce food, as plants are the number one food
producers in the world, and almost every country and civilization uses them for
some purpose. Plants also bring beauty, as many modern gardeners know, I
believe that the desire for beauty has detracted from the potential that plants
have to produce food, in this day and age people do not consider that the
average suburb yard can produce hundreds of pounds of food for a relatively low
price. The only expense when growing food is the seed and water cost, and the
time it takes to tend to it. Seeds can be expensive, depending on what variety you
are looking at, but one benefit is that a bag of seeds will last multiple years,
and in the long run should be worth your while. The cost of water does not
matter so much, because you have to water your garden whether it is productive
or ornamental. Lastly, the time it takes to care for a productive garden, as the
old saying “What you get out of something depends on what you put into it,” definitely
applies here, but as long as you do not create problems for yourself, it should
not take too much time.
Plants are made up of many parts,
some vary in shape, size, and color but the average plant has roots, a main
stem, and branches with leaves. The roots can differ in length and density,
most plants have a large dominant root called the taproot. Almost all plants
have stems, some only have one, such as trees, in which the stem would be the
trunk, and some have many, such as bushes. A characteristic that every plant
must have is some sort of leaf or needle, the entire purpose of leaves is to
perform photosynthesis, which is the process of sunlight being converted to
plant energy.
Plants can get extremely
complicated, but I won’t go too deep into their anatomy, overall, the purpose
of flowers is to reproduce, and this can only be made successful after plants
have “mated,” and this occurs when pollen from one plant is transferred,
usually by a bee or butterfly, to another plant and once that is done, the
plant will close up and develop the seeds. There are two types of seeds, Dicots
and Monocots, a Dicot is a seed with two plant embryos and a Monocot only has
one.
One of the most amazing functions
that plants have is their ability to produce oxygen, believe it or not, oxygen
is actually a byproduct of the plant’s system, it is the exact opposite to our breathing
function, instead of breathing in oxygen and exhaling carbon dioxide, plants
take in carbon dioxide and release oxygen enabling all animals and humans to
breath. One thing is for sure, God knew what he was doing when he created
plants!
